Boomtown Trail
Many of these scenic routes start in Edmonton, so plan for a bit of a trek before your trek. Head to Edmonton and stop for lunch, then hit the Boomtown Trail. This is an alternate route between Edmonton and Calgary filled with history and eclectic fun. Can anyone say frontage facades and the world’s largest lamp? Plan a couple of days to hit all of the stops on your way back to Calgary.
Canadian Badlands
If your little ones are dinosaur enthusiasts, the Alberta Badlands is the perfect road trip. This scenic route starts next door in Calgary and takes a couple of days to complete. You’ll find plenty of geologic formations and fossil beds along the Canadian Badlands as well as the Royal Tyrrell Museum, which is known for its dinosaur exhibits. Wild West enthusiasts should visit the Last Chance Saloon.
Crowsnest Highway
Those looking for a shorter scenic route can travel 96 kilometres along Crowsnest Highway. This trip is filled with coal mining history and will take into British Columbia. Crowsnest Highway can include stops for hiking along designated trails so you can see the beautiful scenery on foot. There are also plenty of charming towns along the way with wonderful eateries and quaint mom-and-pop shops for souvenirs.
Icefields Parkway
Take the two-and-a-half-hour drive to Lake Louise so you can begin to drive along Icefields Parkway. This trek will take you from Lake Louise to Jasper in the Jasper National Park. This scenic route never disappoints. Not only will you see plenty of ancient glaciers that have lived in these waters for centuries, but you will also be blown away by the beautiful lakes and tons of wildlife you’ll see during the drive.
Kananaskis Country
Finally, if you’re looking for a scenic drive in Alberta that also offers plenty of outdoor activities, head to Kananaskis Country. Kananaskis Country is east of Calgary and it is filled with nine – nine! – provincial parks filled with outdoor fun and plenty of wildlife. You can do everything from biking to snowmobiling in the parks, so hit the road and then get outside for more activities than you can handle!
