How Can I Tell if I Have a Hole in My Muffler

Trust us here at Central Auto Care; you will know if you have a hole in your muffler. Your once quiet engine will make your car, truck, or C/SUV sound like a race car. The engine noise will be very loud and it will rumble. This is just one sign that you have an exhaust system problem. In this case, the problem is the muffler. Let’s talk about other exhaust system problems below.

Tapping or Hissing Sounds

Another sound related to the exhaust system that you might hear coming from your engine is tapping. This sound, or hissing sounds, is particularly noticeable when you first start your automobile. If you hear either noise, there’s a good chance that the exhaust manifold gasket is leaking. Consequently, we will need to replace the gasket to solve the problem.

Burning Plastic/Rubber Odors

If the gasket is leaking, it is releasing hot exhaust into the engine. When this happens, your engine overheats. In addition, the hot exhaust can melt plastic and rubber automobile parts found in your engine. If you smell burning plastic or rubber coming from the engine, stop driving your automobile because you’ve got a cracked exhaust manifold gasket.

Acceleration/Power Loss

Unfortunately, the exhaust system can also become clogged. Whether it is leaking or clogged, your vehicle will suffer from acceleration and power loss until the exhaust system is repaired. When the exhaust system leaks, it fills the engine with exhaust gases. This can affect the engine performance, as can clogs that back the exhaust into the combustion chamber.

Reduction in Fuel Economy

Any time your engine is struggling to run you will notice a reduction in your fuel economy. You do not want to head to the petrol station more often than necessary, but exhaust system problems can wreak havoc on the number of kilometres you get per litre.

Damage to the Tailpipe

Sometimes, you can see your exhaust system damage. For example, if you have hit your tailpipe on the road, it might be hanging lower than normal. If you inspect your tailpipe, you might also see visible damage such as holes and dents.

Diesel Fuel or Gas Smells

Finally, if you can smell petrol inside the automobile, your exhaust system is clogged or leaking. It’s dangerous to drive your automobile when the exhaust is making its way into the passenger cabin. Pull over and have your vehicle towed to our shop.
