My Brakes are Squealing

It’s one of the only sounds a driver dreads more than the pop of a tire or the engine not turning over – the sounds of brakes squealing, especially suddenly. Central Auto Care is here to help with your brakes and the regular maintenance your vehicle needs to stop those dreaded sounds from popping up at the worst times. Your vehicle should, after all, be a quiet machine that moves smoothly and stops gracefully without brakes loud enough to wake up the neighbors.

Why are my Brakes squealing?

The most common reason why your brakes are letting out a high pitch squeal is because they are probably wearing out. While hearing your brakes squeal can be alarming, that’s also a sign that the warning system within your brakes is working! Your brakes have a small piece of metal located at the end of the brake pad that contacts the brake pad when the brakes are getting thin. The loud squeal is your vehicle telling you to go get your brakes changed soon. Central Auto Care would be delighted to help. We offer routine maintenance, including oil changes, tires and brake work.

Well, we mentioned that the high pitched squeal is a warning. The next step is metal on metal contact. When you start to hear a louder grinding noise, which probably sounds terrible, you need to bring your vehicle in as soon as possible. The louder grinding sound means that brake failure could happen at any moment because your rotors are being ground away. Here at Central Auto Care in Okotoks AB, we would love to help with either scenario, though we do strongly suggest having your brakes inspected by us on a more regular basis to avoid a dangerous scenario.

Other Causes

Squealing brakes are not always a sign of brake wear. Brake pads also commonly encounter high amounts of humidity and moisture which cause a layer of rust to form on the exterior of the brake pad. The squeaking is partially the rust making contact and being worn off. If a vehicle has been sitting for a significant amount of time, especially in a humid climate, the brake wear can be worse. Squealing brakes after a week’s vacation should go away after a few miles. Squealing brakes after sitting for a lot longer can cause more significant issues.
